In March 2026, thirteen of the world's most passionate birders gathered under the prestigious banner of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for what became a landmark expedition: 17 days of elite birding, extraordinary wildlife encounters, and immersive luxury travel through this extraordinary equatorial nation.
Operated by the legendary Victor Emanuel Nature Tours (VENT) and guided in the field with supreme expertise by Barry Lyon, with unparalleled local knowledge from Herbert Byaruhanga and the Bird Uganda Safaris team, this expedition traversed Uganda's finest ecosystems — from papyrus-fringed wetlands sheltering the iconic Shoebill, to ancient mountain rainforests alive with Albertine Rift endemics and Mountain Gorillas, to the thunder of Murchison Falls and the sweeping savannas of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The Journey: Six Extraordinary Destinations, One Perfect Itinerary
1 · Entebbe — The Welcome
Participants arrived from across the globe into Entebbe International Airport over the opening days. The group assembled at the Protea Hotel by Marriott Entebbe — just five minutes from the airport, with lush gardens that delivered an immediate taste of Uganda's birdlife. A Giant Kingfisher greeted arrivals poolside — Africa's largest kingfisher, and an omen of the spectacles ahead.
Even logistical disruptions caused by instability in the Middle East were navigated seamlessly by the Bird Uganda Safaris ground team. By day three, all thirteen birders were safely assembled, refreshed, and ready.
2 · Mabamba Wetland — The Shoebill Encounter
Mabamba Swamp on the shores of Lake Victoria is one of the most celebrated wetland birding sites on the African continent — and the world's most reliable location for an intimate encounter with the Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex). This prehistoric colossus, with its extraordinary clog-shaped bill and piercing amber gaze, is on virtually every serious birder's bucket list.

3 · Lake Mburo National Park — Safari & Secrets
A full day at Lake Mburo National Park combined a dawn game drive through acacia savanna — Burchell's Zebra, Impala, Topi, Waterbuck, and Olive Baboon all recorded — with a boat ride delivering close encounters with Hippos and Nile Crocodiles. Lunch was enjoyed at Kigambira Safari Lodge, perched above the lake.
The birding star was the African Finfoot — one of Africa's most elusive waterbirds — which glided silently beneath overhanging vegetation and generated genuine excitement among the group's most experienced listers. The White-backed Night Heron was another outstanding tick.
4 · Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — Gorillas & Endemics
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's most biodiverse ecosystems, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park represented the expedition's most emotionally powerful chapter. The group stayed at Mahogany Springs Lodge — a superbly crafted boutique property positioned directly on the forest edge.

5 · Queen Elizabeth National Park — Colonial Grandeur
The group settled into the legendary Mweya Safari Lodge — built in the 1950s and the first lodge in the park to accommodate international tourists. In 1954 it famously hosted Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Positioned on a peninsula commanding magnificent all-round views, Mweya is one of Africa's most historically significant and scenically spectacular lodges.
The afternoon Kazinga Channel boat cruise — one of Africa's greatest wildlife spectacles — delivered dense concentrations of Hippo, Buffalo, Elephant, and Crocodile alongside extraordinary waterbird diversity. An early-morning Spotted Hyena hunt, witnessed from the lodge terrace, was raw Africa at its most visceral.
6 · Kibale Forest — Chimpanzees & Forest Birds
Chimpundu Lodge, positioned at the forest edge of Kibale National Park, provided one of the expedition's most productive birding bases. Outstanding species were recorded directly from the restaurant and balcony, alongside Uganda Red Colobus and Guereza Colobus Monkeys.
Eleven participants joined the morning chimpanzee tracking session — a full hour in the presence of our closest living relatives, engaging naturally around the habituated group.

7 · Budongo Forest — The Royal Mile
The historic Masindi Hotel (est. 1923) — built by the East African Railways and Harbours Company as a rest-stop for travellers heading to Lake Albert, the Belgian Congo, and Sudan — provided a base full of colonial character for the Budongo birding session.
Overnight rain rendered the famous Royal Mile track temporarily impassable, but the team's pragmatic response — birding the main road corridor instead — proved inspired. Nearly all target species were secured, along with Blue Monkey.

Three nights at Paraa Safari Lodge — overlooking a broad bend in the River Nile — framed spectacular wildlife experiences: Lion, Rothschild's Giraffe, Lelwel Hartebeest, Uganda Kob, Oribi, and Common Genet on game drives; the raw power of the Murchison Falls experienced by boat from below.
