Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Arrive at Kigali International Airport where you’ll be welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon—perhaps a walk through Kigali’s tree-lined streets, final safari preparations, and a tasty dinner featuring local cuisine.

Day 2: Kigali → Nyandungu Wetlands → Umusambi Village → Kigali

Explore Nyandungu Wetlands Reserve at dawn, where its boardwalks wind through papyrus and reed-lined waterways, alive with African jacanas, malachite kingfishers, and kingfishers. Later, visit Umusambi Village—a heartwarming survivor home for rescued grey crowned cranes. Return to Kigali for a leisure evening.

Day 3: Kigali → Akagera National Park → Lake Ihema

Drive east to Akagera National Park. Begin game viewing en route, spotting buffalo, impala, warthogs, and giraffes. Arrive in time for a late afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema, revealing hippos, Nile crocodiles, African fish eagles, and vibrant pelicans against shimmering waters at sunset.

Day 4: Akagera South Sector Game Drive

Rise early for a guided game drive in the southern sector. Look out for lions, elephants, antelopes, and secretive pangolin or leopard tracks. Return to camp, relax by the waterhole, and delight in evening wildlife calls around your lodge.

Day 5: Akagera North Sector Birding & Wildlife

Explore the park’s north to search for Fitzwilliam’s francolin, African skimmers, saddle-billed storks, and more. Enjoy a picnic lunch under acacia trees, with full-day wildlife immersion amid one of Rwanda’s premier birding and game-viewing destinations.

Day 6: Akagera → Kigali

Enjoy a final early-morning nature walk or breakfast game viewing before traveling back to Kigali. Arrive midday for lunch and the option to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial or charming craft markets.

Day 7: Kigali Leisure Day

Take a restful day in Kigali—visit cultural sites, browse art galleries, or enjoy a walking tour of the city’s cafes, parks, and architectural heritage, resting before entering the highlands.

Day 8: Kigali → Nyungwe Forest

Journey southwest into lush highland country. Arrive at Nyungwe just in time for late-afternoon forest trails. Spot shy forest birds like the white-starred robin and Angola double-collared sunbird. End the day either relaxing overlooking misty canopies or strolling canopy suspension bridges.

Day 9: Chimpanzee Tracking or Full-Day Birding

Opt for an early guided chimpanzee trek (3–4 hours) through dense forest to encounter troops swinging through moss-draped trees. Alternatively, enjoy a full day of birding to discover Congo sunbirds, Rwenzori turacos, and other forest specialities. Savor a peaceful evening beside the forest.

Day 10: Nyungwe → Ruhengeri (Musanze)

Depart Nyungwe toward Rwanda’s northwestern highlands. En route, enjoy scenic views of rolling tea plantations along terraced hillsides. Pause for birding at swamps or marshes. Arrive in Ruhengeri by evening for a relaxed dinner.

Day 11: Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla Trek or Birding

Early rise for mountain gorilla trek. Search through bamboo and montane forest with expert trackers until you encounter a gorilla family. Spend an unforgettable hour observing feeding, play, and bonding—unforgettable. Alternatively, opt for highland birding: golden spotted ground thrush, Rwenzori double-collared sunbird, and mountain buzzard may appear. Return to lodge in the afternoon.

Day 12: Ruhengeri → Rugezi Marsh → Lake Burera View

Proceed to Rugezi Marsh in the morning. Birding here unearths marsh warblers, papyrus gonolek, and papyrus yellow warbler. Stop for scenic views of Lake Burera and its terraced valley. Spend the night overlooking volcanic landscapes.
